Long days and long driving, but it was worth it. They shot using the Panasonic HVX200 in 720 res. We shot out in youth correctional facility that had been shut down about three years ago or so...but it wasn't a horror film. You could have shot a pretty convincing one there though. I will post some pics on my site when I get a chance. Anyway. Things are going well for me now that I have moved on from NYFA. UVNU is keeping me busy, as well as some new computer clients and other acting possibilities. Editing gigs have been floating my way as well, although I do want to take advantage of this time off from 40 hour a week work and pursue acting with a little more vigor.

Had a lot of things happen yesterday that I guess can be considered blogworthy. Firstly, I had a callback for a Sony commercial that went really well. Then I got a call from a really good training center (Moviola) that wanted me to teach some classes for them (that was cool). What made all of this so nerve wracking was the fact that the possible shoot dates of the commercial would start today and go till Friday! And the teaching would be from 6-10 Mon, Tues, and Wed. of this week and the next. Now the thing you learn with commercials is that no matter how good the audition or the callback is, you can NEVER count on how it felt. If you think about it too much, you end up getting disappointed when you don't get it....and the statistics point to you NOT getting most of the time.....so that leads to depression. So, I try not to think about it, starting about 20 min. after the audition (those 20 min are usually spent thinking about what I should have done or could have said). This particular situation called for me to HAVE to think about it (because shoot dates could conflict with the Moviola job). In any case I accepted the Moviola job and just hope that if I do get the commercial, I won't have a conflict.

Happy 4th everyone! Steve and I are inviting a couple people over for a BBQ. I am pretty hungry right now and the meat isn't even going to go onto the grill for another hour and a half! :-( Not a good sign. We cleaned like mad again today for someone who was coming over to see the place. That was an interesting experience...I think we need to run the add for longer...there is some nasty guilt involved now though as the last person informed us that until we let her know about our decision, she was staying at an extended stay hotel...and it was getting expensive....thanks a lot. I took some pictures of the cleaner room and I have some of the outside of the building that we are going to post. I hope that increases the demand of the place. Anyway...I think I am going to call my folks and then start getting things ready. He was freaking out. I was lucky enough to overhear a co-worker mention that they had extra tickets...so I jumped at the chance knowing that Steve would react the way he did. I went to the screening with no expectations (unlike Steve who went 'knowing that it is a great film'). I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the movie. If you listen carefully you can catch some references to the old Superman films (and some very obvious ones...like the title sequence), and those were really fun to pick out. At one point in the film I suggest you toss your "hang on a second" thought out the window and replace it with "well...he IS Superman". In any case...it is still a really fun movie to watch...and I might be joining Steve to see the film at an IMAX for the 3D parts.

I am still sick...this is starting to annoy me. I am also wary of the Dayquil/Nyquil warning that says I shouldn't take the stuff longer than three days without seeing a doctor. It is a short film called Happy Endings that is being created by a friend of mine. The good news is that I have seen a lot of the footage and it looks good (and the director edits quickly!). The bad news is that I am and have been suffering from a chest cold that has me coughing like crazy and losing my voice. Not the most comfortable way to shoot a movie...especially when I am trying to match my character from a month ago when we started shooting this thing! I have no doubt in my mind that he will do well out here...especially in TV.

Last night we went out to eat with Kevin, and then stopped by at Fermosa Cafe to meet up with some of Kev's friends (well....I think 'one' of Kevin's friends, and a bunch of hers). I had a good time cutting together the fish hit reel too.

So...some good news. I went to the dentist on Thursday and got some wonderful news. The cavity that I thought might have to get excavated 'root canal' style simply received a filling. This is no green flag however...the tooth could get aggravated in the future and need the actual root canal....but for now, I am good! :-) That lowers my expected Christmas cost significantly.
In other news, my book club is going swimmingly. Well...I am reading a lot...and no one else is reading what I write or cares what I am reading. So, I guess I can deem my little book club a success...if you don't count the number of members! Perhaps others will find interest in the books I read. I put my earbuds in to my ears (the place that they should go, for those of you who have been misinformed) and I pressed play. Suddenly my right ear was accosted with such violent sounds as to have never been described in this blog before. That means it was f-ed up. My right earbud is dead...regardless of the volume, the sounds emanating from the little guy is distorted. :-( Very disappointing...Yet at the same time, this also opens the door to the possibility of purchasing new earbuds! Yay.
You see, when I first got my iPod, I loved everything about it, except for the headphones. It seemed to me that Apple had gone a little too far with the "design" aspect and not far enough with the comfort aspect. If you really look at the earbud you will see that they aren't contoured in anyway to be comfortable in your ear...short of being little cubes that you have to shove into your ears, the iBuds hurt to wear. However, they work, and, they actually work well. I have compared the sound quality of the buds to some made by Sony. I thought...Oh, Sony, this is going to sound good....Nope. Sounded tinny and weak compared to the Apple ones. So, I decided that until my current ones break, I can't go out buying new ones. But now I face a dilemma... Only one side is broken...Should I buy new ones now, or do I have to wait until they both break...Or, should I buy a new pair and wear only the right bud from the new one and the left bud from my old one? Hmmm...These are tough decisions I have to make.

Oh, and in other news, my resolution book is actually working quite well. I find it serves as quite the mental deterrent to have to report a "Lapse" on my resolution in the book...Enough so that I am forced off my butt to do what I promised to do. I recommend this book to anyone else who might be having resolution problems. Nothing like the fear of having an actual list of all of the times you screwed up to put you into action!

So, I woke up late for work this morning...and on the way in I realized that no one else was on the road...not because it was raining like the dickens (4 inches this morning) but because today is a friggin holiday! Well...I still had work anyway as it turned out...even though the place where we normally park was closed, so we all had to do street parking. Got a lot done, which was nice, but our office still looks like a mess...my biggest frustration of the day came from the fact that whoever packed up our patch-bay (full of inverters and proc amps and what-nots) didn't pack the ac adapters with the devices that needed them....and we have a lot of things that need ac devices! So I spent a very long time searching out hidden adapters. I ended up just saying forget it, and plugged everything in. I left a huge pile of adapters on the floor for me to go through tomorrow......joy and rapture.

Happy New Year Everyone!

So, I started a new little thing on my main site that I think will be fun. It's a book club....with a rolling admission policy...I think the message board setting is a cool way to allow anyone to join the conversation of one of these clubs at any time after they have read the book. Anyway...just like watching a TV show or movie that others have watched, it feels good to be able to read a book with others and then rip it apart or praise it together! :-)

New Years resolutions begin today...and I have three that I am going to start as soon as I can get around to it....:-) While I was in Washington, D.C. I bought a book called a Resolution Tracker. It was actually a pretty cool concept: The book contains little contracts to yourself and certificates of achievement that you can give yourself if you maintain the resolution for a certain amount of time. The book is based upon a concept that you can make or break any habit in 21 days. Now, the booklet inside the packet clarifies that this holds true depending on the difficulty of the resolution....like an addiction to Heroin would be difficult...an addiction to licking the backs of toads would be easier to kick, unless you owned the toad...then I guess it would be in your best interest to get rid of him.

So i am going to start that today...not the toad licking habit...the book....but not to worry...it isn't going to be part of the book club. I am awaiting the title of a good book from my friend to start my next book. Happy Reading! And Happy New Year!

It's been a while....
I have been away for a while...touring the nation by plane for the holidays. I had recognized the name (Truman Capote) but couldn't place where I knew it from. Well, Truman Capote was an author...among other things he wrote Breakfast at Tiffanies as well as In Cold Blood (the book that this movie revolves around). Magnolia actor Phillip Seymore Hoffman played Capote. Not actually knowing Mr. Capote personally I can't tell you if Hoffman's portrayal was accurate, yet I can tell you that the character that Hoffman created and maintained throughout the movie was incredible. His performance is certainly going to generate an Oscar nomination. Go see this film...it isn't an action film, or even a thriller; it is a drama that will suck you in.

Walk the Line
Another good film...one that I wished lasted longer (a good sign). The movie ends 30-something years before his death, but accomplishes it's goal of telling the story of how Joan and Johnny met. Joaquin Pheonix does a phenomenal job...at times I thought they were using stock footage of Mr Cash...and did an amazing job sounding like him both while speaking and singing. The beautiful Reese Witherspoon did a great job as well portraying June Carter. I see Qscar nods for both of them. I have a lot more to see before the Oscar announce date, but I think the ones I am predicting will hold....we shall see.

NYFA Softball Report
I know you are all waiting to hear how the game went last night...well, perhaps not, seeing as the only people who read this are either on the team, or know people on the team who have probably already told them how it went. Well...I'm going to tell you anyway! So there! The game was set to be a tough one...the last time we played this team, the UMS Noods, the game was called before half due to the rain....and we are all glad that happened...we were getting smoked! Talk about a game full of excitement! Questionable calls, Players getting Ejected, Chad getting hit in the head with a bat! In the end, we held on for a win.
The season is over, we now stand in first place with a record of 8-2 (a significant improvement from last years dismal 0-10 record). Now we head into the playoffs. The first game is next week...we would love to know who were are play against, but after us in the standings sits a 3 way tie between the Noods, DC Top Guns, and the Chang Gang. 1st plays 4th, 2nd plays 3rd...so I have no clue how they are going to figure this one out. Wither way, if we make it to the championship game (December 19...my Birthday) we are going to be missing a ton of our guys! So that game would be a challenge. Anyway...we won...I am happy. And Chad did in fact get hit in the head with a bat...it was more of a glancing blow...and now Chad is walking around claiming to be made out of Alumantium or something...that the bat had a significant bend in it after it hit his head. And Kristina hurt her finger, but because she wants to make sure that she gets as injured as possible, she is going to hide it in her pocket until it turns black...then, and only then, will she go to a hospital to have it looked at. I can imagine this is how the conversation would go:

Doctor: Ok..let me see your finger.....GOOD GOD! What in the name of Lord Baby Jesus is on your hand!
Kristina: Oh, that's my finger. Say 'Hello' finger!
Doctor: Holy Crap! Why didn't you come in to see someone sooner!?
Kristina: Well, this happens all the time. Once...I slid into a base...and then I licked the scrape wound...and then I got an infection....but I waited until I sar it get all red and it hurt to walk on it. It's more fun that way. My boo-boos are like new friends....I don't want them to ever go away. Look at my scar on my leg... Say 'Hello' scar!
Doctor: Wait...you sar it get all red?
Kristina: Yep...sar it get all red. So I put some goo on it that I keep in my draw. It reminds me of when I lived in West Virginyer. I used to play with my Hooler-Hoop a lot. I was the Hooler-Hoop champion of the south. Yep, I beat out kids from Georger, Florider, Alabamer, and even this foreign exchange kid I sar from Alasker.
Doctor: Wait...Alask-a is part of the US.
Kristina: Yeah...but they all look like Mexicans.
Doctor: Does everyone experience this dizziness when they talk to you?
Kristina: My mom says that's what makes me special.
Doctor: Well, special or not, we are going to have to remove your finger.
Kristina: Oh.....do I get to keep it?
Doctor: Excuse me?
Kristina: Do I get to keep it? I have an iPod shuffle case that I can put it in and wear it around my neck. Then I can feed it soup. And I will call him...Brad. Yes, Brad.
Doctor: Listen...this is a very serious case here. I am going to have to cut off your finger or you will die.
Kristina: Brad.
Doctor: I'm sorry?
Kristina: Brad. His name is Brad.
Doctor: Jesus...ok...we are going to have to cut off Brad in order for you to live.
Kristina: Good. Because I don't think I could fit all of my other finger friends into the iPod shuffle case anyway. This way Brad will be more comfy. Say 'Hello' Brad.

That was a mere dramatization...I don't know if that is exactly how it would go....I think I have gone on for far too long. Point is...she should go see a friggin doctor before it's too late. Anyway...that's enough for now I guess.

I learned something today...
...well, a couple of things....
1) Other people read my blog
2) You don't have to be a MySpace member to read myspace blogs
3)Cadbury makes a candy bar called Wunderbar that kinda freaks me out..ie it's weird to eat (chocolate covering a hard shell of caramel covering soft peanut buttery something or other)

On the docket to discover:
1)What you call someone who is a morning person and a night person ( I think I fall into that category)
2)Why SPAM has that layer of jelly on top of it when you open the can.
3)And who the hell came up with the idea for 'Canned Meat' anyway.

Hmmm....things to ponder...or look up on Google.

The Drowsy Chaperone
Ok....so, if you are looking to do anything in the LA area before December 24th, you should go and see The Drowsy Chaperone at the Ahmanson Theatre in Downtown LA. Last night I took Maria to see this musical on the recommendation of my voice teacher, and unlike the last musical that he sent me to see (The Grand Tour....a 'delightful romp' through war torn, Nazi ridden WWII era France...from now on I will avoid any musicals that claim to be a 'delightful romp' through anything!) I loved this show!
It was friggin hysterical. Here is a review to spark your interest. I have started watching more musicals in order to increase my general knowledge of what is out there or has been out there on the stage, and although there were quite a few inside jokes poking fun at musicals, I think the humor would translate over to a non-musical background audience. I wish them luck on their Broadway stage pursuit...with Tony award winner Sutton Foster in the lead female role I don't think they will have any problem getting that opportunity.
In other news, the use of the word "Scheid" as both adjective, noun, verb and insult seems to be as rampant as ever. I don't know how much of this is actually being used in every day speaking, but I know that it can be found all over Kristina's Blog....oh, and for those of you who want to actually read it, you sadly have to have a MySpace account....which I don't have....so I have no idea what she is saying....I just hear everyone laughing when they read it. Should this depress me? I think I need to stop thinking about it because it's starting to.

7-2

Our new record. It's strange to think that just last season we were 0-10. It was another good game with more strike-outs and some good hits from the whole team... We played against "Rough Draft", who I found out is in fact an animation company in the area (they were the ones responsible for Futurama), and ended the game with a 19-11 victory. The most notable element of the evening was who they had on first. She was pregnant...and I don't mean a little pregnant either...she had to be about 8 months or so.... I don't know if they were using it as a weapon against us on purpose or what...but it was certainly awkward... especially when one of her teammates yelled out "Put that baby into it!" when she was up to bat. Thankfully there were no incidents...although I cringed when one of my pitches came a bit too close to her head.

Anyway...I have an audition that I have to go to in about 10 min. for Nickelodeon...I have to brush up on my Aeronautics terminology. Yaw. Roll into a bank and do a stall-turn into a barrel roll. Hmm....sounds good enough to me....now to get them to believe it!

Another NYFA win!

We won again...this time against the dreaded Chang Gang...aptly named after where they work (PF Chang's). They weren't really dreaded...but we knew they were going to be tough competition. We had some great base running and a few good hits during the game to get us much needed runs, but what really helped us out was patience at the plate! The pitcher for their team was a little off tonight (and in this game where you have to actually hit the plate, a little off is a big deal) and we took advantage of that with walks.

By the end of the game we started to feel what I think were the Santa Anna Winds coming in, a warm breeze from the mountain side of the field. This made pitching more difficult as I now had to compensate for the wind, something that can really screw up a high arc slow pitch. Not to toot my own horn too loudly, but I did strike out one of the batters with two beautiful pitches that curved out and were carried back in by the wind to hit the plate for a strike. I just hope it the winds don't pick up any more...it makes my job more difficult...and it's already hard enough having to listen to Chad heckle me the whole game. :-)

Anyway...next week we face a bigger problem...some of our girls play in another league on the same night...they happen to be playing at the same time that we are...if we lose them...we won't have enough girls...and we will have to forfeit the game!!!! :-(

So...don't expect too much from us next week....just wish us luck.

That's so "Scheid"

Well...apparently, my last name has now become an adjective to describe...well, I'm not even sure what it describes...I have yet to determine if it is a negative or a positive...

To explain: The people I work with (namely Brett and Kristina) have started to use my last name in every day insults. Team NYFA won another one last night. It had been 3 weeks since our last game (because of rain delays) and we were itching to get out there and play some ball. We hit well, made some excellent throws, and a couple great catches...all while trying not to stoop to the other team's level.
This is what happened....last week, one of our girls, Natacha Bedu, twisted her ankle, to the point of almost breaking it. Needless to say, she is in a cast and cannot play. So, we asked the team that was playing before us if they had any girls to play on our team, we only needed one to fully cover the field. We grabbed tthis girl named Jess and started to warm up. Well, after our first at bat was done and we took the field, the manager of the other team calls the Ump over and complains that the girl we grabbed isn't actually on our roster or team. A petty move for a team that was losing 4-0 at that point. So we had to play the field with one girl down...yet we still kicked their butts. So, now we are sitting at a 4-2 record and they have a 3-3. We are second in our division to a team we beat (they are 5-1) ....and next week I am not going to be here!
Going to my grandfathers 90th birthday...90! Last time I saw him he didn't look nearly that old. I hope he is holding up well...we shall see. Anyway. My best goes out to the team...I hope we crush 'em next week!

For a limited time only (I hope) we'll also throw in this lovely SNEEZE when you purchase COUGH. Here to replace it is the New! and Improved! COUGH!!! Wake yourself up with this chest ripping cough every morning. Or how about at night right when you are going to go to bed, how about a chough to tell the person next to you how much you care for them. Best used during a live performance of your own! Generate both sympathy and distance from your friends and family with your very own New! and Improved! COUGH!

I shouldn't have fallen for that pitch...but for some reason I got it anyway. I was simply overcome with wonder and amazement at how they could have two exclamation points in the middle of a sentence, as if they were two words with different meanings than their exclamation point-less counterparts. And then the word with all caps really got me. That one took me right up to the counter, out the door, and back home all before I realized what I had purchased.

NYFA Softball update: We won again. 29 to 2. If we keep this up we might be in the playoffs....first time ever for this team. I have to hide my COUGH from them so they don't try to buy it from me. Then the team would be really screwed.

Stuffy and Sick
So, it's cold season for me I guess. Why is it that only one nostril decides to clog up entirely and the other stays free and clear? I mean I guess it is better than having both clogged...but you have to admit that it is kind of annoying. This is especially true when you are trying to blow your nose and one side is raw from all the wind rushing through and the other is filled with cement. So, the stuffy nose, plus the cough, plus my voice lesson tomorrow, equals...no fun for me.
Oh...NYFA Softball update...our team won another game on Monday, with a score of 26 - 5. This was a really fun one for us...you see, last season our record was 0-10 (the 0 is wins my friend), so any and every win is great...Hey, I even hit a grand slam! It happened to be inside the park...actually, it happened to be inside the infield...there also happened to be enough errors on their part to get us all in on that play. But it was a GRAND SLAM!!!!! :-)
I'm going to go blow my nostril.

By the way...for anyone interested. My friend Kevin got a new car, the Scion tC, which is quite a nice little car. It has a sweet sunroof that extends from driver to passenger doors and a roof that is made up of large glass panels, all of which flow back toward the hatch-back style truck. Another cool little feature that the car has is the reclining back seats! As long as there is absolutely nothing in the trunk you can actually recline the back seats a bit (into the trunk area). And the alloy wheels that come with the car standard are pretty sweet as well, as you can see. For those who haven't noticed this part yet either...Kevin is in fact trying to look 'cool', so this little car review should boost his confidence as well....not in humanity...but in soending money to make you happy. I have wasted absolutly too much time talking about Kevin here...time to change the subject....um....cheese cloth. Not a bad win by any standards.

Forest Fire
I have never, until a couple of days ago, ever seen a forest fire. I had always imagined it would look like a massive forest of burning trees...as if someone had turned on a light switch in the forest, and all the trees turned on...with flames. If you have never seen one before, it is much less dramatic, yet still mesmerizing to watch. (I found myself staring at the flames from my balcony through binoculars for an hour.) So instead of a huge field of flames, the fire was more of a very long thin orange line that snaked across the mountain. Smoke around the ridge was reflected the orange light from the blaze, and every now and then the fire would hit a particularly dry spot and flare up, sending long tendrils of fire into the sky. Helicopters and special planes (which I later learned had been sent on loan from Canada) could be seen dropping their loads of water onto the flames. I checked periodically throughout the night only to see the fires still burning. In the morning the smoke was so thick above the Burbank hills, where the fire had been, that you couldn't see anything. The biggest fear now is that as we enter the rainy season here in Southern Cal, the soil isn't protected from mudslides. Yikes....anyway...enough of this talk.

It's getting hot in here....
It is actually getting freakin hot in here.....I don't know the official temperature right now, but I do know that since the sun has gone down, the temperature has not! Plus, even if it did, because of the fires that are raging to the north of the city, we can't open the windows to let any of it in! It smells like all of LA has gone camping....not to mention all of the ash that is in the air and subsequently in my house and up my nose.
Oh, and those reports of old polluted warehouses going up in flames does nothing to calm the nerves about the air quality! The last time I checked, 'burning and scattering the ashes' was not one of the 'safe' ways to get rid of toxic waste.
Anyway, had an audition today where I had to play an Indian Guru who tries to get into girl's pants by pretending to feel the heat of their 'chakras' by pressing up against them. The audition went as well as it could. The spot would be regional only, meaning it would only play in one region, and seeing as it was for a Nevada Power company, I am going to take an educated guess and say that the region would be Nevada. I know...I'm going out on a limb with that one. I am hesitant as to proclaiming how well the audition went, only because of the variety of people they had called in for the guru. There were fat guys, skinny guys, bald guys, red heads even (who would all at the end of the commercial be revealed as 'just being Kevin from Vegas', and not 'Master Babshi' all powerful guru.)...it is easier for me to judge when I am looking at ten versions of me around the waiting room, rather than a broad mix....but then again it is also easier for me to say 'oh they went with the redhead for a funnier reveal' than 'oh , I must not have been as good' if we had all looked the same.
Ok...I need to go and ring my shirt out....I hope I don't drowned in my sweat tonight as I sleep!

NYFA Softball Team

So, I am on an intramural co-ed softball team that is sponsored by my work, NYFA. For the most part, the players we have on the team are from work, others we have recruited from other teams. Anyway...we have had quite the losing streak that ended last week with a great win...that I was sadly not part of.... and I have been reminded of that fact by the team on several occasions. I am the pitcher for the team, slow pitch...high arc, and last game while I was away we had one of teammates take over...she apparently kicked some serious booty on the mound...and therein lies the basis of most of the chiding I have been receiving all week.

As for how we did tonight...we lost...but, it was a very close game (10-13) ...those losses tend to be the most painful. I am pretty happy with my performance...walked only one person caught ball for an out, threw a couple to first for outs and was 3 for 3 at bat, one of those being a double. Not bad at all in my book.... and now I can only hope my teammates stop threatening to take me out of my position! :-)

Next time we'll get 'em!

Audition Madness
So, if you didn't already know, I am an actor. And, as I have yet to get a theatrical agent, I have been auditioning solely for commercials. Like today, for example, I auditioned for a commercial for the new mobile phone company Amp'd. And on Friday of last week I auditioned for this breakfast sandwhich maker made by "Back to Basics". Anyway...my audition went well today...as well as you can ever have an audition go I guess. You see, when I went in to audition, the instructions for the audition went something like this:

"Ok, we don't want you to show any emotion. Take all of the things that you learned about commercials and acting and throw it out the window. We want this to be totally emotionless."

Which is exactly what they don't want...they actually want you to do something that hinges right on the edge of doing something, and not doing something....and telling you not to do anything really screws you up!

So we will see if I get the call back or not. Keep your fingers crossed...but do it without any emotion.

Well here it goes. I am probably starting off this blog the same way most people do...by admitting they never thought they would ever have a "blog". I think the word "blog" was actually word of the year last year....hmmm...anyway, just a side thought....one of many of those you will be reading I am sure.
So what the devil am I doing? For one...I am currently working on my website (robertscheid.com) and this is a much easier way to update people with news and what-nots. Especially those ever important 'what-nots'.
I have been hesitant in working on my new website...I would sit down in front of my computer, start placing objects and pictures, and then simply quit the program I was using all together. The only person I can blame is my girlfriend. Yep....Maria Eberline is to blame....well, not really Maria exactly, but her website (mariaeberline.com). You seee, I made that website for her, and it was recieved quite well. In fact, people like it a lot....I even like it....to the point that I was afraid to make my own.
Well, I eventually gave in to an idea that I had, and if you have come from that page here, or if you are going from this page there, you will see what it is. I think one of the problems wasn't that I had a lack of ideas...it was that I had WAY TOO MANY ideas! Ideas that were complex and creative, that would require hours and hours of research and design to complete....but when completed, wouldn't really represent me. For example...I had an idea to make a website that was an old typewriter...you could click on the keys and it would make the clickity clack noises and dings and even type things up on a little peice of paper. What do I have to do with typewriters? Nothing....exactly.
So, we will see how long the design I have currently chosen will stay. Until then, you can see what I have to say right here. Enjoy! ...as if anyone is ever going to read this anyway! :-)
